Team Power of 1 is taking on the World's Toughest Row in memory of Saoirse O'Driscoll. Starting on 12th December 2024, Saoirse's Dad John along with his teammates Conor, Daragh, Enda and Roger will row 5,000 kilometres across the hot, fierce, and diverse Atlantic Ocean. Racing from the volcanic shores of San Sebastian de La Gomera, Spain to the paradise of Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua. Our mission is to fundraise €250,000 to help children born with congenital heart disease in Ireland.
Saoirse was a bright light in the lives of those who knew her. Born in December 2010 with complex congenital heart disease, Saoirse faced challenges that many of us can't imagine. Despite the daily struggles that came with her condition, she embraced life with a vibrant spirit, always showing kindness, selflessness, and creativity. Her ability to find joy in even the smallest moments left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Though her time on earth was tragically cut short at the age of 13, Saoirse's impact was profound. She lived with a deep appreciation for life, turning what could have been insurmountable obstacles into opportunities to spread love and positivity. Her legacy is one of resilience and beauty, reminding us all to cherish each day and to approach life with the same courage and grace that she did. Saoirse's family and friends are left with an irreplaceable void, but they are also left with the memories of a young girl who, in her short time, lived a life full of meaning, fun, love and purpose. Her influence will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her.
Team Power of 1 strive to continue Saoirse’s legacy by raising awareness of congenital heart disease and promoting the life-saving importance of organ donation. 1 in 100 babies born in Ireland will have a form of congenital heart disease. Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect worldwide. Many children born with congenital heart disease will require lifelong support, medications, and multiple surgeries including open heart surgery. The life of a child born with congenital heart disease can be fraught with difficulties and challenges that affect various aspects of their everyday life. People with congenital heart disease often appear outwardly healthy, which can lead to the misconception that they are not facing significant health challenges. This was true for Saoirse; few people knew the battles she faced every day. Congenital heart disease often is life-limiting and debilitating, affecting daily activities and overall quality of life. Help us support the children to ensure they can live a meaningful and fulfilling life with the best medical care.
Our target of €250,000 will be shared between Heart Children Ireland and the Children's Heart Centre at CHI Crumlin, both of which played a vital role in Saoirse's life. Heart Children Ireland is the national charity supporting children born with congenital heart disease and their families, throughout their lifetime. The Children's Heart Centre is the national centre of excellence for cardiac care for all children born on the island of Ireland with congenital heart disease.
100% of funds raised will be directed
