In January 2024 the seed of an idea was sown to build a currach from start to finish and row it 46km from Inisheer to Galway. 

With a lot of thought and research it was decided it would be a great fundraiser and the build started in March. 

In the last few months members of Galway Fire and Rescue Service have constructed a currach during evenings and weekends, thanks to support from management allowing space for work and storage.

The boat is 22ft long and is our slightly more reinforced take on the traditional design of a canvas currach. It is made of basic materials such as rough saw red deal for the frame and oak lats for the ribs and it has a canvas outer skin coated in tar.

Two years ago a close colleague of ours, Simon tragically lost his wife Gina to cancer. We are honoured to be in a position to try and raise some money for Cancer Care West in her memory. We are delighted to have Simon and both of his children Molly and Joe with us for this journey. We will have 3 rowers from each watch and 3 from the retained section taking part. 

We plan on leaving Inisheer early on the morning of August  23rd 2024 (Friday) and making it into galway before the the tide reaches its predicted 5.2m at 20.40.

We have received nothing but positivity and support from both firefighters and management within the brigade.

We have a big challenge ahead, but I am confident we can achieve our goal.
