Dear colleagues and friends,

You have been sent this webpage in Ireland because you have a very close association with SeeBeyondBorders and the work in Cambodia.

It is with a heavy heart that we must convey the tragic news of the passing of our dear colleague and friend yesterday, Chhout Sovoeun. Sovoeun was not only a dedicated staff member and a truly skilled teacher, he was also a loving husband to Sin Sokong and father to two young children (Phuthearoth aged 7 and Sovannareach aged 4).

In the past week, Sovoeun fell ill and was transferred from a rural hospital in Siem Reap to one in Siem Reap town, and then to Phnom Penh. Sokong, who has been a pillar of strength throughout this ordeal, shared with us that on the day of this death (Saturday the 25th of November) he was diagnosed with rabies– an unforgiving disease that resulted in his untimely passing. He was 34 years’ old.

Sovoeun had only recently rejoined SeeBeyondBorders, returning to our team just thirty days ago, after having worked with us for nine years (2013-2022). In 2019 he was selected by SBBC to travel to Ireland for two weeks as part of a Study and Collaboration Visit. This was a highlight of his career as he spent time in schools and universities and in rural and urban Ireland.

This tragic loss has left a profound void in our hearts and in the lives of all those who held him dear.His funeral has begun today the 27th of November and he will be cremated on Wednesday the 29th of of November.

As is quite common in Cambodia, Sovoeun’s family may be supported during and beyond this devastating time through monetary contributions from friends and colleagues past and present.
