We are a group of 6th class girls from Scoil Treasa who have been taking part in the FIRST LEGO League. Our team name is GPS, which stands for Girls Play Sports - but more on that later!

The FIRST LEGO League is a worldwide competition that combines robotics, engineering, and coding with real-world problem solving and team work. As part of the competition, we have had to design and program our own robot, who we named Rachel, using LEGO Spike Prime.

We have also had to identify a problem and use our engineering mindsets and technology to solve it. We have researched and found that there aren't enough girls our age playing sports and that girls quit sports at a young age too. We have carried out two whole-school surveys and read national reports about girls in sport. We have also designed a prototype website so that more Girls Play Sports (our team name!)

The next step on our journey was the regional final in DCU at the end of February. On this day, we won the robot game and placed 2nd overall!

We then got invited to the All Ireland Final in Santry, which took place on March 23rd. Here, we managed to shine our absolute brightest and walk away with the top prize - the Champions Award. We were complete underdogs in the competition, having never competed before. We also only started preparing for the competition in the middle of January. We are absolutely thrilled to have won the All Irelands!

But, we’re even more thrilled to discover that all our hard work has paid off and that we’ve been invited to Bodø, Norway to represent Ireland in the International Open European Competition! This is an absolute dream come true. It has been our absolute dream since we started to go and represent Ireland at the international finals. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the six of us.

Getting to Norway is going to be a very expensive trip and it isn’t something we can do all by ourselves. We don’t have a final price yet, but we estimate it will be around €15,000 to pay for our team registration, flights, and accommodation for our few days in Norway. Because the competition is in just 7 weeks, the prices for everything are getting more and more expensive each day.
