In December 2023, my life changed dramatically after i had a rare spinal cord injury, Cauda Equina Syndrome. After months of physiotherapy for what was thought to be 'mild sciatica', I woke up, one cold and rainy December morning, paralyzed from the waist down on my right side. I underwent two emergency spinal surgeries, with doctors uncertain about my prognosis, I have spent months in bed and in intensive rehabilitation in Tallaght hospital and the National rehabilitation Hospital and I am incredibly grateful to all the wonderful staff that have supported me on my continuing journey with cauda equina syndrome.
I have learned to walk again with a crutch and AFO (leg brace) and I also use a wheelchair during periods of chronic pain, loss of power, and fatigue and manage the damage to some of my internal organs.
My husband, Andy; my absolute rock, and our three wonderful young boys have faced this life-changing injury with unwavering love and support and always keep me company through many a disney movie and never fail to make me smile. I feel so lucky to have such an incredible tribe around us and my parents, my brother and his lovely wife, and my friends have continued to be my biggest champions.
Coming to terms with my disability and chronic pain has been really difficult but I feel that I have started on a journey of acceptance with the goal of living a fulfilling life and creating beautiful memories with my children and loved ones. Despite just learning that I now need further surgeries and facing waiting lists, I’m determined to make the second half of this year count. So much has been put into perspective for me. Throughout all of this, Spinal injuries ireland has provided invaluable resources, support and kindness and I can't begin to imagine how much harder this journey could be without them.
This November 2024, I will take on a physically and mentally challenging accessible trek through Costa Rica. This trek is not just a personal goal, but also a fundraising effort for Spinal Injuries Ireland, an incredible charity that has provided wonderful support to me and my family. They have shown me that life as a neurodivergent and newly physically disabled woman, mother, wife, daughter and friend, can still be made up of days filled with love, belonging, fulfillment and enjoyment. Please join me in supporting Spinal Injuries Ireland and help me give back to an organization that has made such a significant impact during the most difficult period of my life.❤️

I'm facing my fears; sloths (crazy, but true 😅), the unknown and vulnerability to fly across the world with 19 strangers and show myself that nothing needs to be easy to be possible
