My name is Brian Byrne and I was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer in May 2022. I have been an endurance runner all my life and a member of IMRA since 1983.

The “Glanageenty Loopers” run in Glanageenty Wood, Ballymacelligott and are entering a
relay team to run 600Km from Bray Head, Co. Wicklow to Bray Head, Valentia Island . This
race will take place over an 8-day period from Saturday 22nd June to Sunday 28th June 2024.
Brian Byrne is a founding member of the Glanageenty Loopers, and along with two
colleagues, completed this run in its entirety in 2000. This year, Brian has inspired 10
members of Glanageenty Loopers to take on the challenge as a relay. The race has now
been placed on the annual race calendar with the Irish Mountain Running Association
(IMRA).
The runners will start on Bray Head, Co Wicklow on 22nd June, cover a number of trails across five counties before reaching the Kerry Way at Killarney, on to Portmagee and finally
to Bray Head on Valentia Island some 8 days later.
The 200-year-old Valentia Slate Company, which earlier this year achieved the coveted
status of World Heritage Stone, is sponsoring the finisher mementos for the race. Its unique slate will be a fitting acknowledgment of this grueling 600k endeavour.
The “Glanageenty Loopers” have chosen to fundraise for The Kerry Hospice Foundation
which is a voluntary organisation that provides funding and support for Palliative Care Services in Kerry.
