My grandad passed away on May 4th this year.
I always knew that Our Ladys Hospice was a very special place with nearly everone I mentioned the hospice to having a connection or a family member there at some point in time.
But, it was my good friend Nikki who really enlightened me about the services of Our Lady's Hospice, and sharing her experience of losing her mam Angie at such a young age (52).
As a result, supporting my friend, I have only ever taken part in the mini marathon in a bid to raise money for Our Lady's Hospice in Angie's memory, and was planning to do so again this year marking ten years since her mam Angies passing.
I didn't realise when I signed up this year that exactly 10 years to the very day from Nikki losing her mam Angie, that I would be sitting in the same hospice, grieving my grandads death.
Completely heartbroken while also praising the compassion, empathy and dignity of care that the Hospice staff provided my grandad and our family, It seems only poignant to celebrate both of these remarkable souls (Shay and Angie) and raise money for the incredible services provided by Our Ladys Hospice.
As we did the very first year, I know we will cross the line together making both Shay and Angie proud.
My grandad Shay passed away peacfully 4.30am on Sat May 4th in the beautiful surroundings of Our Ladys Hospice during what he described to my cousin Laura as his favourite time of day, the dawn chorus.
His death was peaceful, dignified and he was treated with care and compassion for his, albeit short stay there.
His legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and we will never forget the care free time Our Lady's gave to us.
